Steph Thornton talking about Perran YarnsHello! I’m Steph – indie dyer, marketing manager, order packer, website developer & coffee maker at my business Perran Yarns. I individually handdye luxury yarns in my dedicated home dye studio, near the beautiful Cornwall coastline of Perranporth.

Yarn bases

I choose luxurious base yarns including blends such as merino, tencel, silk, baby alpaca, baby camel, Bluefaced Leicester, and more. Softness is essential to me, as I’ve always had sensitive skein that is prone to eczema. Life is too short to spend time carefully hand-crafting next-to-skin projects with scratchy yarns!
We are so fortunate to have a huge array of wonderful fibres available to us these days. I like to source slightly more unusual luxury yarn bases which are not so readily available where possible. Examples I’ve stocked are pure banana yarn and pure yak yarn.

Dyeing techniques

I kettle-dye, hand-paint or dip-dye the skeins individually in very small batches using professional Jacquard dyes.

The process means that there are subtle variations within each batch and between batches. With over 15 years dyeing experience, I am still delighted and surprised by the tones and shades achievable with these methods.

Colourway inspiration

My colourways are inspired by all sorts of things such as seasonal changes in the beautiful Cornish landscape, favourite foods, Pantone colour fashion forecasts, and custom requests

It is very important to me that colourways are wearable when worked into the final project. Looking great in the skein is lovely when you want to browse your yarn stash. However the aim is usually to create a useable item with the yarn at some point, which looks fabulous too!

Available products

The original knit and crochet kits and patterns that I stock mainly use single skeins of Perran Yarns. Multiple skeins may be used in a single project, but in this case I recommend that you use 2 skeins simultaneously. Work a couple of rows from each skein in turn to even out the shade differences.
