What is tencel?

Tencel is made from wood pulp from eucalyptus trees that are sustainably farm-grown without the use of genetic modification or pesticides. The processing required to convert it into usable fibres is known as a ‘closed-loop system’, continually reusing the required solvent and using minimal water and energy, making it one of the most environmentally-friendly fibres produced currently.

Tencel yarn is similar to bamboo; it is smooth and soft, with a wonderful silk-like drape and sheen. It is a strong yarn which is comfortable to wear against the skin.

Tencel blend yarns

The Perran Yarns range includes two Tencel yarns, both blended with merino, in laceweight and 4ply weight, called Bright.

Lace Bright is sold in 100gram skeins, containing 800metres of yarn. They can be used with any standard 2ply laceweight pattern suitable for a silk-blend yarn.

4ply Bright is sold in 100gram skeins, containing 333metres of yarn. As this is a heavier yarn with less metreage than standard 4ply,  it can be used with any standard sportweight pattern suitable for a silk-blend yarn.

Tencel blend knit kits

The Sandy Shore Cowl knit kit has been developed as a collaboration with Scottish knitwear designer JenStarKnits.

The cowl was designed especially for one skein of our 4ply Bright yarn, making the most of the yarn’s drape and metreage.

The pattern incorporates an easy lace stitch with picot edges to give a seashore ripple effect. The kit is suitable for intermediate level knitters.

The kit includes a printed copy of the pattern together with the yarn, which is available in a variety of beautiful hand-dyed colourways.

"Beautiful wool, lovely colours. Can't wait to knit with it. Excellent customer service and speedy delivery. I'll definitely order again."

The Lacy Heart Shawl knitting pattern was designed by me to make the most of one skein of our 4ply Bright yarn.

I was asked to design a shawl pattern that looked like crochet but was actually knitted. Show visitors often think it is a crochet design when they look at the sample on display, so the plan worked!

The pattern uses an easy lacy design with a small repeat that is easily memorised. The kit is suitable for intermediate level knitters.
