I’m excited to tell you about our brand new knit collaborative knit kit, the White Horses Mittens!
The kit has been designed by Scottish knitwear designer Jen from Jenstarknits. Jen has written today’s guest blog post telling us about her inspiration for the pattern. Over to you Jen!
How did we meet?
Hi I’m Jen from Jenstarknits and I’m an Aberdeenshire based knitter and designer.
Steph and I connected through Etsy not long after I had my son. I was just starting out designing knitting patterns and so had bought some of her lovely hand dyed yarn to make a cowl. Steph asked if I wanted to collaborate and produce a pattern to sell as a kit. I’d never done this before and was excited to face the challenge!
We then worked together to make the Sandy Shore cowl kit which was my first pattern release as part of a kit.
Colour inspiration
Moving forward a few years and I still love Steph’s yarn. I decided to ask her to create a new colourway inspired by a picture of a snow topped mountain. She quickly created several new yarns and I found it hard to choose a favourite, so decided to incorporate two of them into one pattern.
Naming the design
It so happened that the time I had to work on the design and as when I was on our family holiday to Orkney. You’re never far from a beach there, and I just love the constantly changing mood and light of the place.
While I was working on how to marry the two colours into one pattern, it struck me how the stripes I’d knitted as a sample resembles the gently crashing waves I could see from the window of our holiday cottage. The White Horses Mittens were born.
This mittens pattern is great for those looking to move on from beginners patterns and try something in a couple of colours. Knitting in the round using magic loop you will end up with a pair of cosy mittens that will be sure to keep your hands warm this winter.
Thanks Jen; it’s easy to see how the yarn colours mirrored the waves breaking on the shoreline!
Where to find the design
The White Horses Mittens pattern is avilable alongside other readymades and knitting patterns in Jen’s Folksy shop.
The White Horses Mittens kit includes a printed copy of the pattern along with 50g of soft DK Falkland Merino handdyed in each of the two co-ordinating colours used. The yarns are wound ready for you to grab your needles and start knitting! The kit and needles can both be purchased from my Etsy shop.
Happy knitting!
Steph.
